Week Three – DS106 Says Design

We’re into the third week of ds106 and sadly our poor Prof. Oliver Lindenbrook seems a bit out of sorts. So I’ve brought my friend Chris Stein to talk about design, as well as discuss some of our favorite ds106 visual and design assignments.

So for the next week I’d like you to do two of the assignments we talked about. The Four Icon Challenge and Messing With the MacGuffin. Here’s a tutorial for Messing with the MacGuffin using GIMP and MPEG Streamclip. Also pick a third assignment from either the visual assignments or the design assignments.

Very, very important that you tag your assignments properly. So for example, the Messing with the MacGuffin assignment needs to be tag with both:

It will look like this in your dashboard for the post:

Let’s bring it on, I love design—I think we should make maps to the center of the internet. I might have one around here somewhere from Dr. Oblivion

A mapping assignment sounds really cool. Would be interesting to recombine that with Tim Owen’s Google Street View assignment and some of Jon Rafman’s ideas about Google Street Views.

I made a Prezi presentation about Gen Ed reform which used a heavily edited old map detailing the journey of Jason and the Argonauts pursuing the golden fleece. The Gen Ed committee had used this trip as a metaphor for the college struggling through the reform process. Prezi is a big pain the ass, but the presentation was pretty nice.

Gentlemen, kudos to the work you are doing with sharing the digital storytelling to the masses. I acknowledge that Groom and Smith are two of the finest in this field. They continue to churn out amazing makers of the web.

But there is a dark underbelly of the digital storytelling story. I’ve come to realize that there are some hacks out there peddling themselves as digital story telling gurus. Case in point is this so called professor in Tokyo.

Don’t worry, I’ve taken over his class and will lead his several dozen students to the promised land of making digital dreams come true.

I will look to the work being done here at ds106 as inspiration and good example and encourage my newly acquired students to participate from Japan. But I also intend to latch on to and stake claim on the very heart and soul of the internet. Be careful of my wake as I pass you guys on my way there. Would hate to swamp you.

Otto – Fine work you are doing with your students out in Japan. It’s too bad you feel the need to shelter them from the full force brought on by ds106. You do want them to actually learn something about digital storytelling don’t you?

      1. Otto Paertz Avatar

Well said, MB Smith – it would appear that they are being sheltered. I believe that is owing to the fragile state of their “professor’s” grasp of what is at hand here. This is part of the reason I’ve stepped in. You might call it a DS Intervention.

To date, the “professor” has introduced the ds106 way. He has encouraged the students to take a look and enter if they see an opportunity and have the desire.

I suppose this is all I can hope for. As much as I bash the guy, the “professor” out there in Tokyo does seem well intentioned. He realizes that for some, the internet is still a big weird frightening place.

I shall remain your obedient servant and do all I can to marshall the forces for our quest to find the meaning of cyberspace, reality and the story.
