Video Transcends

These two short videos were part of the web-based video art venue called Streaming Festival—now in its 10th year as well as the Queensborough Community College Art Gallery as a permanent online video. “If I could Just Reach my Utility Belt” is inspired by the iconic film Thelma & Louise, but instead of the two newly freed female protagonists whose escape from misogyny involves driving over a cliff to their deaths, we see Batman and Robin in the driver’s seat headed for the cliff. Unlike the women, the male characters are able to escape at the last moment. “Making me Feel Glad That I’m Not You” is a commentary on our society’s cultural interest in watching people suffer through moments of profound humiliation and degradation on reality television.
